Director of Data Governance and Analytics
About the Role
A UK-led digital education organisation is seeking an experienced and purpose-driven Director of Data Governance and Analytics to lead its organisation-wide data strategy. This newly created leadership role will focus on ensuring secure, compliant, and ethical use of data, with a particular emphasis on GDPR, data governance best practices, and cloud infrastructure (AWS).
Working at national scale, the organisation supports the delivery of high-quality digital curriculum and learning tools to schools across the UK. The Director will play a pivotal role in embedding trusted data practices and unlocking the value of analytics in a complex, mission-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the organisation’s data governance and analytics function, owning strategy, policy, and delivery.
- Develop and embed data governance frameworks that ensure compliance with GDPR, data protection legislation, and public sector digital standards.
- Oversee the secure use and management of the organisation’s AWS-based data infrastructure, including policies for storage, access, and lifecycle control.
- Act as the organisation’s senior authority on data protection and privacy, leading internal compliance and supporting responses to external audits.
- Establish data access protocols, ensure appropriate classification, and drive responsible use of data across functions.
- Build and lead a team of data specialists, driving excellence across data quality, cataloguing, profiling, and analytics.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across engineering, legal, product, and operations to embed data governance into strategic initiatives and everyday practice.
- Promote data literacy and trust, delivering training and communication that supports responsible data use organisation-wide.
- Define and track key metrics for data governance adoption, quality, and analytics performance.
Candidate Profile
- Significant experience in data governance and privacy leadership, ideally within regulated, digital, or public sector environments.
- Strong technical understanding of cloud infrastructure, particularly AWS, and secure data lifecycle management.
- Deep knowledge of data privacy frameworks, including GDPR, the Data Protection Act, and associated regulatory standards.
- Demonstrated success leading cross-functional data teams, especially in analytics and governance.
- Proficient in data profiling, warehousing and tools.
- Track record of working closely with legal, compliance, and engineering stakeholders.
- Comfortable designing and implementing data governance tools and processes from the ground up.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills; able to translate complex data concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Values-led leadership style with a commitment to safe, ethical, and high-impact data use.
